Description
Shahar doesn't really care for dressing up for any occasion. I, on the other hand, freakin' LOVE it.
Mulling over what to make him into for Halloween (as I knew I would be Velma Dinkley) I realized he had the perfect Hellboy shaped head and face!
Now, those pre-made costumes that cost $60 are HORRIBLE. Rubber skull-caps look like shit and all the materials are corny and cheap.
I set out to make the costume on my own.
Shahar agreed that if I put it together he would wear it.
AND I DID.
I bought him a trenchcoat at the army surplus for $15. It wasn't perfect but I couldn't find one anywhere else and the price was right.
I made his horns and fist out of foam, glue and paint.
I bought 2 long slabs of foam for a few dollars each and then cut them in half and glued the 4 pieces together with regular elmers glue. I had to prime each surface with glue, first, to fill in the porous material and thus make the glue hold it all fast together.
Once I had a solid block of foam I began carving. I used a simple, dull knife and carved the whole thing myself.
It took a few days and many hours, it was hard to cut through the glue and I'm usually TERRIBLE with 3D projects (I'm more of a 2D girl) but this came out surprisingly well.
When I'd finished the final touches of swirling indents and "cracks" I painted it red, bit by bit.
I did the same with his foam "horns."
I had planned to attach the horns via spirit gum and flesh latex for a really real look but Shahar had a reaction to them and we had to improvise last minute.
Duct tape REALLY DOES fix EVERYTHING. O_O
It worked in a pinch.
A little red face-paint and a red painted glove later and I had my hellboy!
I can't wait to see how he does in the costume contest at PAS!
